The globally-inspired barbecue concept by James Beard Award-winning chef Gerard Craft will feature the techniques of American barbecue with international flavors in a multi-floor restaurant with outdoor terrace patio.
Niche Food Group, the hospitality group from James Beard Award-winning Chef Gerard Craft, is introducing a new globally-inspired barbecue concept, Expat BBQ, to open at City Foundry. As Niche Food Group’s eleventh concept, the well-traveled barbecue restaurant features flavors from around the world with American BBQ techniques.
“We want to have fun with this one,” says Niche Food Group’s Owner and Executive Chef Gerard Craft. “Barbecue is ubiquitous around the world, found in every country and culture, and the menu celebrates the flavors that someone would experience when traveling abroad. There is so much great barbecue culture already in the U.S., from Memphis to the Carolinas, and especially here in St. Louis, so this will be different than anything currently offered here. While we’ll be utilizing techniques from U.S. barbecue, we are also finding inspiration from Brazil, Thailand, Africa, Australia, and beyond. Expat BBQ allows our team to have some fun and explore what excites us when traveling. It’s also a great way to introduce guests to new flavors through the familiar vehicle of barbecue. Yes, we will still have brisket and St. Louis-style ribs, but they will feature flavors not typically found in traditional U.S. barbecue. We want this to be a fun and inclusive concept that has plenty of options for plant-based eaters too, so there will be a strong focus on vegetables as well," says Craft.
Expad BBQ will be located on the south side of Foundry Way with an entrance just east of the Food Hall; it serves as our first and only full-service restaurant. The three-story concept includes a full-service dining room on the first floor, a second-floor mezzanine for private events, and a more casual experience on the third floor utilizing kiosks and app-based ordering. The third floor also features an expansive bar, a terrace patio for 70+ guests, a live music stage, and more.
Will Smith, Managing Director at New + Found, City Foundry STL’s development group explains
further, “We set out to celebrate the innovation and cultures that make up the fabric of our St.
Louis community at City Foundry STL, and Expat BBQ does both. We’re thrilled to have another
reason for both travelers and St. Louisans alike to gather and eat with us while they also shop,
play, listen to great music, enjoy a movie, and more.”
